President Barack Obama Wins the Nobel Peace Prize
Oct. 9, 2009 - President Obama has become only the 4th U.S. President to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Two previous presidents won the honor while in office: 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt won the award for negotiating a peace treaty between Japan and Russia in New Hampshire in 1905. 1919, President Woodrow Wilson won the Nobel prize after he pushed for the creation of the League of Nations following World War I.
In 2002, former President Jimmy Carter won the prize for his many years of traveling around the globe to promote human rights and mediate disputes.
While Republicans have chimed in to say that "the President's star-power has blinded the Nobel committee," President Obama has stated, "I will accept this award as a call to action."
The President is expected to travel to Oslo, Norway on December 10, to accept the award.
